There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over Bundeena in winter. The ferry slows. The bush goes still. The Pacific turns a deeper shade of grey, and the Royal National Park wraps itself in morning mist. It is, without question, the most beautiful version of this place and the most honest invitation to slow down and stay indoors.
That is exactly the moment a hand poured candle earns its place.
At Luna & Lo. The Label, we make candles right here in Bundeena and winter is our favourite season to do it. There is something fitting about pouring warm wax on a cold morning, about crafting something designed to bring light into the shortest days of the year.
Why Hand Poured Matters
Mass-produced candles are filled with paraffin, a petroleum by-product that burns quickly, throws artificial scent, and leaves behind a waxy residue. Our candles are made using 100% natural coconut soy wax, poured slowly and carefully by hand in small batches. The result is a cleaner, longer burn, a truer fragrance throw, and a jar that tells you it was made by someone who cared.
Each candle takes time. There is no conveyor belt, no automation. Sarah pours every single one herself, right here in the coastal town she calls home.
The Scents Built for Winter Nights
Our winter collection leans into warmth, depth, and comfort. These are the scents we reach for when the temperature drops.
Vanilla Caramel is buttery caramel, velvety vanilla, coconut and tonka bean with a clean-burning cotton wick. This is the candle equivalent of a blanket and our most requested scent through the cooler months. It burns for approximately 48 hours and fills a room slowly, generously, and without announcement.
Bundeena captures salt air, warm earth, and the faintest trace of eucalyptus from the national park. Light it at dusk and remember exactly where you are.
Paradise opens with coconut, guava, and orange blossom before settling into white musk and tonka bean. Summer warmth you can carry straight into the cold months.
Caring for Your Candle This Winter
Cold weather affects how a candle performs and a little care goes a long way.
Always trim the wick to around 5mm before each burn. On the first light, let the wax pool reach the full diameter of the jar, usually two to four hours. This prevents tunnelling, where wax burns down the centre and leaves a thick ring of unused wax on the sides. In cooler rooms, this first burn matters even more.
Our cotton wicks are designed for a clean, steady flame. If the flame appears too high on first light, simply blow it out, trim the wick slightly, and relight.
A Winter Gift Worth Giving
If you are looking for something meaningful this season, a hand poured candle from Bundeena carries a story. Made locally, sustainably, and with real attention to craft. Our candle and reed diffuser gift sets are a natural pair and our reuse and recycle jar refill program means the relationship with your candle does not have to end when the wax does.
Winter in Bundeena is not something to endure. With the right light, the right scent, and a steady cotton wick, it becomes something to savour.
